//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Preserving our History…Preparing for our Future
Historical Preservation Project The goal of this project is to honor the memory of a fallen war veteran for which the street was named. It was introduced by Mayor Land in 2007 to educate residents about the significant contribution these individuals have made to our community. To date, markers have been placed on Martin Street in honor of Lt. Albert Martin and Grossenbacher St. in honor of Jack G. Grossenbacher. The Youth Advisory Board is responsible for raising the money to pay for the marker, collecting research data on the war veteran, and designing the layout of the marker. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Keep Apopka Beautiful
Adopt-A-Road Project This is an on-going project to help keep our city clean. The street adopted by the Youth Advisory Board is Martin Street between Vick Road and Park Avenue in front of Apopka High School. The students chose this street so that they could keep it clean and show pride in their school and the surroudning environment. The Youth Advisory Board is responsible for picking up litter and debris on the street at least once per quarter or on an as needed basis throughout the year. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Youth Advisory Board Council Meetings
Civics Education Project The goal of this project is to educate the board about the role of their local elected officials and learn about the process of local government. Once per quarter the members of the Youth Advisory Board will conduct a council meeting at city hall. The board is responsible for electing the “council members” that will represent them at the meeting, draft an agenda, conduct the meeting and prepare a follow-up report for the City Council of the outcome of their meeting. This is a public meeting in which other youth in the community as well as the general public are encouraged to attend to learn about the projects of the Youth Advisory Board. The public (particularly the youth) are encouraged to voice their opinions and concerns about youth related issues in the community. The Youth Advisory Board is responsible for addressing any concerns brought to their attention at the meetings and posting the outcome on the YAB web site. This project is scheduled to begin in November, 2009. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Ge Mentoring and Volunteer Initiative The goal of this project is to encourage students to become volunteers and mentors in their community by working with local charitable and civic organizations. The Youth Advisory Board members are responsible for developing a database of organizations that need volunteers to be posted on this web site and for setting a goal to get students to commit to 100 total volunteer hours. Members are also responsible for creating a series of PSA’s for schools, writing articles and press releases for the local newspaper to spread the word about this initiative. The Youth Advisory Board members will lead by example. Each member has committed to seven (7) hours of community service per month for their chosen organization. Project is scheduled to begin in November, 2009 |
